Turning off DEP is not recommended, but if you need to for any do that for what ever reason

bcdedit /set nx AlwaysOff

make sure you are running the command prompt as an administrator. This will require a server restart.

dll registration error 8002801C

If you are attempting to register a dll and encounter 8002801C, It is most likely a security issue. try registering from the command prompt when running as an administrator. You might already be an administrator in the box but that is what did it for me

SharePoint 2010 – Web application cannot be found

Recently, I was trying to debug a feature receiver in a desktop application. I kept getting the error “The Web application at could not be found. Verify that you have typed the URL correctly. If the URL should be serving existing content, the system administrator may need to add a new request URL mapping to the intended application.”. Searching over the internet and numerous links later, this is what worked for me.

From what I have seen and understood, VS 2010 by default compiles it to an x86 dll that will not work on the sharepoint server which is 64 bit. change the build settings for the executable to be a 64 bit.

As always be sure to check the permissions.

Indian debt woes

I was intrigued with a question “How much does the Indian Govt owe?” and how we as Indians can afford to get by the vast subsidies and pro election bonanza that our politicians give away every 5 years or every time there are elections. Free TV’s, Free gas stoves, farm debt waiver over 6,500 billion Rs and what not. It is the cost the country is paying to keep the ruling party in power. I pity myself and the rest of the folks who use their franchise to elect similar minded folks.

I personally love having some debt as it keeps me on my toes as to the different ways I could improve efficiency in my personal spending, devise investment strategies or come up with different plans or the different businesses I could get into. It is not to say that I come up with great ideas all the time but it keeps the engines aka brain humming at good rhythm.

Applying the same logic, is our government doing any thing I started looking on the internet for some good answers and stumbled upon an interesting fact. Our govt owes 80% of GDP and pays a ton of interest to just maintain the budget.

The search led me to an interesting article posted here provided me a good indication of what to expect on a long-term. Here are my ideas on what to expect from our govt long-term. Consider yourself warned.

The govt will tax provident fund (PF aka 401K) and other long-term savings. Our FM has indicated that he will not tax PF right now but that is very bound to happen. I would ideally expect us individuals to decide how to invest in rather than the govt paying a paltry 8.75 or 9% simple interest on our PF every ear. This by no means is a small percentage in developed countries but given our stock market volatility and the investment gurus that the newer generation is, there ought to be a choice on where I would like to invest my money as opposed to giving it to the government to finance its debt.

The planning commission would most likely run out of funds or have insufficient funds for infrastructure, state plans or what ever they do.

Reliance Industries, Tata group and Sunil Mittal will own 95% of what are currently called Navratna. No offense to the Birlas or others who will have a good share but the list is a very small one.

I hope that the Indian govt adopts some strategy as opposed to being the stupid, old dick headed idiots that put personal betterment over national issues. They butcher the country selling it off like the various cuts of steak to the highest bidder.

A welcome verdict….

While it was a foregone conclusion that kasab will be found guilty, hearing the verdict is a welcome sign. I am eager to see when he will be hanged. Does the cost justify the horrific memories it brings back each time any news about the case comes up?

It is hard to believe that the two Indians who provided logistical support were found not guilty, we should reshape the law to be involved with terrorists a serious crime. In the state of washington a recent law change that made people culpable of the same offences as the perpetrator for harboring or providing any support. The law should be framed to deter people from even considering involving in any acts against the nation. we used pre-independence era laws to convict him.

IIS 7 – Part I

I spent some time configuring IIS 7 as we started migrating our Windows 2003 servers to a Windows 2008. While the list of enhancements/ changes are long, I will try to split it into a multi-part posting hitting on some of the concepts in each of the posts. While there are lots of enhancements, the integrated pipeline, Modules, and applicationHost.config, appCmd.exe, Request Filtering enhancements, feature delegation, Microsoft.Web.Administration namespace, Runtime State and Control API are some of the major things with the new version of IIS.

This time around, Lets spend some time on feature delegation and runtime State and Control API.

Feature delegation:
Previously with IIS 6, Only local administrators could configure IIS. The new version supports delegation that essentially lets you identify the users that can manage the server the sites or applications. You could add a user to be a site admin(s) that will have all control over the website. You could also add a user to be able to manage an application/virtual directory. They would be application admins. All of this is possible due to the fact that IIS is built using .net framework and relies on the concepts similar to ASP.Net. You have the applicationHost.config that is the base for all IIS configuration. Then the machine.config and finally the web.config. With this setup, IIS is able to identify and manage users. This helps developers manage the server settings for the application without waiting for the network admins to configure all the settings

Is MOSS the new application platform for everything???

Microsoft keeps bundling more products into the SharePoint platform. The changes are pretty huge and are good for the customers. here are some changes announced of late

1. SharePoint designer (SPD) is license free and can be downloaded free of cost.
2. Customers with SPD license will now get a license to Microsoft Blend
3. Excel Server is free. I think this is only for customers with enterprise license.
4. PerformancePoint 2007 is being merged into MOSS. upcoming service pack will blend performancepoint well into SharePoint.

Even more convincing for the customers to jump on the SharePoint bandwagon.

Enabling sites to work with IE 8

I was recently trying to enable a site built 4 years ago to work with IE 8. The site used excessive javascript and was attempting to bring in Ajax functionality. After spending 4 hours to fix the javascript issue, I didn’t want to spend time trying to fix the code but was looking to get it done via configuration. Microsoft is good at providing a backward compatibility.

Finally I was looking at the IE team blog and it struck to me that you can achieve it using the Http Headers. You can achieve it using in many different ways.

If you are using master pages and have the source code, the simplest way would be to
into the head tag.

This is essentially indicating the browser to behave as it were IE 7

If the number of changes are more or need a simpler solution. With IIS 7 you can add the following section into your web.config

With IIS 6 and other versions

1. Click Start, click Run, type inetmgr.exe, and then click OK.
2. Expand the server you want and then expand Web Sites.
3. Right-click the Web site you want and then click Properties.
4. Click the HTTP Headers tab.
5. Under Custom HTTP headers, click Add.
6. In the Custom header name box, type X-UA-Compatible.
7. In the Custom header value box, type IE=EmulateIE7.
8. Click OK two times.
